In
the fall of 2000, the Pen Argyl Area School District
established a committee to address concerns and
issues within the Pen Argyl, Wind Gap and Plainfield
Township areas. A subcommittee was formed for
the purpose of investigating ways to meet the
needs of families and youth that are beyond the
educational scope and financial capability of
the school district. The Families First Committee
grew to approximately 50 community members, educators,
school administrators, parents, business people,
government officials, clergy, and counselors from
the community.
On
June 6, 2002, Families First opened its doors
in the Wind Gap Middle School, with the objective
of utilizing community resources to enhance the
health and well being of all families and youth
in the Pen Argyl Area. Families First provides
services, programs, resources, and an environment
in which family members in the Pen Argyl Area
School District are assisted toward a better quality
of life. Our Family Center is a partnership committed
to developing a community network of support and
a welcoming place where families are offered compassionate,
knowledgeable, and confidential assistance. We
offer more than twenty programs, focused on health,
education and parenting, intended to provide family
members with the assistance and tools they need
to improve their quality of life.
The need and demand for services has been tremendous.
In 2003-2004, Families First served 964 families
and utilized the time and talents of 350 community
volunteers, all “helping people help themselves!"
